Choose the right appliance for condensation, damp smells, pollen, smoke or particles — and know when neither fixes the cause.
The essential difference
A dehumidifier lowers relative humidity by removing moisture. It is relevant when condensation and excess indoor moisture are the problem. A portable air cleaner passes air through filters or another cleaning process to reduce certain airborne pollutants.
Neither appliance repairs a leak, replaces adequate ventilation or removes established mould from building materials.
Choose a dehumidifier when moisture is central
Signs include persistent window condensation, slow indoor laundry drying and high measured relative humidity. Before buying, rule out leaks, penetrating damp and failed extraction that require repair rather than moisture collection.
Choose an air purifier for airborne particles
A purifier may be relevant for particles such as pollen, smoke or dust. Match its clean-air delivery capacity to the room and choose a filter you can afford to replace. Avoid products that intentionally generate ozone in occupied spaces.
Treat combined machines as two separate claims
Some dehumidifiers include a particle filter. Check whether the fan can run in air-cleaning mode without the compressor and whether replacement filters are available. A filter label alone does not tell you how quickly the whole room's air is cleaned.
When to seek help instead of buying
Damp and mould can affect health and should be dealt with promptly. Tenants should report the problem to their landlord in writing. Anyone with significant symptoms or concerns should seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on an appliance recommendation.
Common questions
Will an air purifier stop condensation?
No. A purifier does not remove meaningful quantities of water vapour. Address moisture production, ventilation, heating and building defects; a dehumidifier may help with excess humidity.
Will a dehumidifier remove mould spores?
Its main job is moisture removal. Lower humidity can make conditions less favourable for growth, but existing mould and its underlying cause still need appropriate action.
